1Tim. 4:16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
I’m amazed and somewhat surprised at how so many people are drifting away from the truth once handed down. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised in that the scriptures totally makes it clear that in the latter time, people will depart from the faith, will have their love grow cold, will forsake the gathering together – so we should expect it. But it still amazes me.
This month (February) we are going to do a Trinitarianism Course from 6:30 p.m. til 9 p.m. (with appropriate coffee breaks etc) every Friday night starting on Feb. 3. You need to come. We actually skip the third Friday for the Solid Rock Cafe and add in one on the first Friday of March.
Have you ever wondered about how the Trinity is explained? Can it be explained? Should we even be trying to explain it? These questions and many more will be answered at the Trinitarianism course coming up.
The scriptures are clear.
Rom. 16:17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.
Eph. 4:14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
1Tim. 1:3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine,
1Tim. 1:10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,
1Tim. 4:6 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.
1Tim. 6:3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness,
Titus 1:9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
So when I read scripture like those, I realize again the importance of the instruction, the training, the teaching in and of sound doctrine. The word “sound” is interesting in that the dictionary definition as it relates to the word ‘solid’ — as: free from injury, damage, defect, disease, etc.; in good condition; healthy.
I realize that someone is responsible for the teaching of sound, healthy doctrine – the truth once handed down — and that someone ultimately for our church is myself and the eldership of our church, who will give an account for the souls of those in our fellowship.
To that end, we will preach the Gospel – the cross, the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ who died in our place for our sins on the cross. And, we will teach the historical, Biblical teaching of the Church.
